No.4 The Tube

London, England
Commonly referred to as “The Tube,” London’s underground network is the oldest in the world, as well as the longest, with 400 kilometers of track. It’s also one of the most traveled with over one billion passengers recorded in 2007. This network is linked to London’s other rail that includes the Docklands Light Railway, which gives passengers a scenic view of the Thames. The underground offers LED displays that tell riders when the next train is coming and cushioned seats in cars. While it did report delays in 2006, there are signs it’s improving its reliability. The overall system suffered a blow to safety with terrorist bombings in 2005, however more CCTV cameras have been installed and a police presence has been increased. In a recent TripAdvisor survey, travelers voted it the best system in the world. And it’s relatively safe for a subway system of its size -- averaging one death per 300 million travelers. Just remember to mind the gap.
