Bride Breaks the White Wedding Dress Tradition and Marries in a Fabulous Black Dress

By Sara Barnes April 14, 2016

When a newly-engaged woman is looking for a wedding dress, one thing seems clear: regardless of the style, the garment will be white. This long-standing tradition has yet to fade from its 19th century popularity, but some modern brides are defying convention to stunning effect. Australian blogger Sophie Cachia is one of them! She went with a bold choice for her nuptials, opting for a fabulous designer dress clad entirely in black and adorned with intricate embroidered accents.

Tradition was not a factor for Cachia as she and her then-fiancé, Jaryd, prepared for their wedding. “If you were to specifically ask me why I wore black on my wedding day, I can only answer in the most honest and direct way possible; because I wanted to,” she wrote on The Motherish. “Black is classic. It looks good on just about everyone. It’s bold, it’s sexy, it’s daring. I find wearing black to be extremely striking, hence why it’s my go-to choice of color to wear on any occasion.” Jaryd also skipped the standard three-piece suit and wore a paisley shirt, red velvet jacket, and black wax-coated jeans instead.

Like Cachia’s dress, the event itself was unconventional—it was a surprise! The wedding was disguised as her 25th birthday, and only when guests arrived was the truth revealed. “We wanted to get married in the best way that celebrated us as a couple,” she wrote. “That way was to do everything that reflected us as individuals—rejecting any form of expectation when it came to standard wedding protocol.” The couple treated their wedding like a big party and had a great time knowing it was all their own.
