Abstract Aerial Photos Offer Extraordinary Views of Iceland and Botswana

Photographer Zack Seckler captures breathtaking, abstract views of the earth’s landscapes, seas, and wildlife from above. His stunning collection of aerial photography, aptly titled Above, comprises images from his trip to Iceland in 2015 and Botswana in both 2009 and 2016, showcasing the stark yet beautiful contrasts between these two very different remote landscapes.
Seckler first took to the skies in 2009, when a pilot in Botswana invited him to join him on his ultra-light aircraft to fly over the region’s salt flats. “It’s just me and the pilot sitting right next to each other, knees practically touching,” recalls Seckler. “There are no real doors, no windows—there’s only a windshield, propeller, and wings.” The photographer later returned to the Southern African country in 2016, covering nearly 2,000 miles and 45 hours of flight in just one week. From zebras dotted across green vistas to buffalo journeying across white sands, Seckler captured extraordinary bird’s-eye view shots of the region’s diverse natural landscapes and the wildlife that inhabit them.
Between his two stints in Southern Africa, Seckler went to Iceland in 2015, where he captured incredible images of the wild Nordic landscapes. His aerial shots reveal ethereal, textured worlds where icy-blue waters swirl and ripple like thick blends of oil paint on canvas. “From elevations between 50 and 500 feet, the landscape hovers on the line between things looking very real and recognizable and being more abstract,” says Seckler. “That’s what really draws me in—the line between reality and abstraction.”
