Built under the River Thames between 1825 and 1843, London's Thames Tunnel was the first successful attempt anywhere in the world to construct a tunnel under a navigable river. Today it is part of the London Overground rail line, which links areas north and south of the river. (Peter Macdiarmid/Getty Images)
