The Apeiron Island Hotel, Dubai

The Apeiron Island Hotel may not have been built yet but it’s already generating huge interest. The $350 million development will be the second (self-awarded) seven star hotel in the world so will be competing with the Burj Al Arab.  It will be a jungle themed hotel built 300 meters off the shore of Dubai. While the top two floors will be home to a jungle with butterflies and insects, the bottom floors will be underwater. The underwater spa, gym and restaurant will provide the perfect display for the tropical fish and colourful coral in the area. The hotel has also been nicknamed “The Rollmop”, “The Pringle”, and “The Funnel” due to the unusual design.



The Shimao Wonderland, China

Construction is still underway for the Shimao Wonderland in China and is expected to be finished by 2015. The £345 million hotel is being built in an abandoned Chinese quarry and two of the 19 stories will be underwater. It is being built into a mountainous landscape and will welcome outdoorsy guests who enjoy water sports on the surrounding lake. Other activities will include rock jumping and bungee jumping. The underwater floors will include guest rooms and a restaurant looking out onto the natural aquarium in the lake.

This is another underwater resort that isn’t quite ready but guests can register to ensure you’re one of the first to stay in this incredible hotel. This five star resort will be the first permanent one-atmosphere sea floor structure and the only true underwater resort. The suites will have panoramic undersea views to an artificial reef where a huge variety of colourful sea life awaits. Guests can control their own underwater lights to enjoy the view any time of day or night and they will even have a button to send food out to feed the fish. The hotel will have an underwater wedding chapel for any guests who would like a wedding with a difference.

The Water Discus, Dubai

No, a strange alien spaceship hasn’t landed in the sea, this is the design for the new Water Discus hotel in Dubai. The hotel will have two disk shaped sections, one above ground and one beneath the water. With just 21 suites, this luxurious hotel has an air of exclusivity and is sure to attract nature lovers and those keen to try a new experience. The upper pods of the hotel are detachable and will serve as life rafts in case of an emergency.

The Hydropolis Underwater Resort Hotel, Dubai

The Hydropolis Underwater Resort Hotel is currently the largest construction project in the world. The area they are working on covers 260 hectares, a similar size to Hyde Park in London. Visitors will be greeted at the land post where they will board a silent train into the underground Hydropolis. The Hydropolis will feature a restaurant, cinema, spa, business centre and a marine biology lab.

Hilton’s Conrad Maldives Rangali Island Resort, Maldives

The Lifeboat Hotel, Netherlands

The Lilla Marras lifeboat was saving lives between 1955 and 1979 but her workload eased once she was converted into a hotel. The boat was restored and is now moored in Harlingen in the Netherlands where it provides a cosy and romantic place to escape for two people. Inside the boat are all the amenities you would require and the clever design ensures it’s both stylish and luxurious. Unseen housekeepers will arrive in the morning with freshly baked bread and breakfast goodies and there is a skipper at hand in case you’d like to take her for a spin.
