Want a boyfriend?

Wear red (and avoid yellow) on your next date

  • Men in couples were asked what their partner wore on first date
  • Most (92%) remembered, and a quarter (27%) said she was wearing red
  • They said yellow and brown are the colours most likely to put them off
  • Women 'like men in grey best', and pink or yellow would put them off

Men are most likely to form a relationship with a woman who wears red on the first date.

According to a new poll, the safest colour to wear to bag a boyfriend is scarlet, while the ones to avoid are yellow and brown.

Women, on the other hand, tend to find men the most appealing when they are wearing the colour grey

More than a quarter (27 per cent) of men said they remembered their partner wore red on their date

Yellow is most likely to put both sexes off on a first date in a potential partner - and women especially dislike a man in pink.

The survey looked into how clothing choices on a date affect levels of attraction.

Researchers aimed to discover exactly which colour of clothing was most likely to catch the eye of both men and women when searching for a mate, and just how significant clothing colour can be when looking for love.

They polled a total of 1,128 female and 1,232 male adults from around the UK, all of whom were currently in relationships.

Respondents were initially asked if they still remembered the outfit that their partner was wearing the first time they met them, with 92 per cent of respondents stating that they did.

Then these individuals were asked what colour it was that stood out the most for them in this original meeting and what their current partner had been wearing at the time.

When asked 'If your current partner had been wearing a colour that you didn't really like when you first saw them, do you think it would have put you off them?' more than a third (38 per cent) of women and a quarter (27 per cent) of men said 'yes'.

Furthermore, men voted yellow (39 per cent) and brown (28 per cent) as the colours most likely to put them off members of the opposite sex.

Women revealed that a man wearing pink (38 per cent) or yellow (31 per cent) would put them off approaching a potential love interest.

'Whilst it may well be considered fickle to base the odds of a second date with someone on the colour they choose to wear upon an initial meeting, the fact is that we make our primary assessments of potential partners extremely quickly,' said George Charles of vouchercodespro.co.uk, who commissioned the research.

'It is human nature to want to find faults and imperfections within these individuals in order to protect ourselves from hurt later down the road.'

'It therefore makes sense that before you really get to know someone, fashion sense, and in particular, clothing colour choice, is one of the first things the brain will notice and evaluate for later analysis of a rendezvous.'
