Japan's Seikan Tunnel was built to provide a safer way to cross the dangerous Tsugaru Strait between the islands of Honshu and Hokkaido, a place where typhoon winds frequently lash the coastline. A 1954 storm in the strait sank several ferry boats, killing more than 1,400 people. (Wikimedia Commons)
